Informal landscaping is more relaxed than formal landscaping.  If hedges are used at all, they are not sheared flat, but instead they are left fluffy and soft.

Perennials such as Hostas are used more as a border than hedge-like shrubs such as Boxwoods.  In fact the borders probably would not be all the same type of plant, but most likely a variety of plants.
